I visited Cajamarca some decades ago, and the story I was told about Atahualpa was that he ransomed himself to the Spanish by filling a rather large room up to as high as he could reach (and that he was large, 6' tall) twice with silver and once with gold. Then they held him down on a stone in the center of the room and made him drink molten gold.

So, add another lurid execution story by the Spanish to the list.

Now, about the suspenseful ending to this podcast...

PS you also seem to allude to the Religion-art-science -magic cycle described by Lionel Snell (Dukes), which I think is totally on point and in fact has been reflected in popular media for quite some time now.
